Old Witch
by YannickBouchard

Q1: When did you start making art?
Well I guess I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember. Drawing as always been a big part of my life, and even as a child I knew I wanted to be an artist. I started painting when I was around 18 years old.

Q2: What does inspire you?
I’m very much inspired by women, their beauty, but also the humanity and the emotions behind the appearance. I also love nature.

Q3: What are your techniques?
It depends on what I do. I love oil painting, but I also started doing digital painting 5 or 6 years ago, which I mainly use for commissioned projects of all kind. But I still love to draw, especially with ink.

Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
A recurrent trend in my work is a dreamlike feeling, anything that’s fantasy, a bit weird sometimes. My work, most notably my paintings, has big influence from the surrealist movement. I love doing floating objects or characters, bodies merging with (or transforming into) something else.

Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
I don’t think there is one main color in my art, except anything that would be considered “skin tone”, since there’s always at least a character as the main focus in my paintings. Other than that, I just go with what I feel is right, depending on the subject and the feeling I want to evoke.

Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
Specifically, I don’t really know, but for sure there is always room for improvement. I try to paint as realistically as I can, but without necessarily giving it a photorealistic look. Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell do that wonderfully.

Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
In the last few years, I’ve been doing quite a lot of commissioned works and T-shirt designs, and while I intend to continue doing so, I would like to find more time to do oil paintings and exhibit.

Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of YannickBouchard.
Fantasy, dream, beauty.

Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
This HERE is not my very first work, but what I deem to be my oldest painting that I find acceptable from a technical point of view and that I am not ashamed to show. It represents well my body of work in terms of subject and feeling.

Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
Most obviously, I am getting better at controlling the medium and the tools. I find my early work to be very mediocre, so at least it is good to see that I am improving, and hopefully I will continue to do so.

Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
For me, it is more about opening doors and seeing things differently, not so much “escaping from reality”, but bending it, looking at it from a new point of view, seeing the unseen, depicting feelings and emotions, creating a personal reality.
