Until I Say
by Ryan-Alexander-Lee

Q1: When did you start making art?
I have been making art all of my life, but made the decision to take it to a professional level in 2009.

Q2: What does inspire you?
I am inspired by mythology from around the world, history, literature, and music. As a child I spent many hours playing RPGs and dreamed of one day creating my own world and story.

Q3: What are your techniques?
I like to build up with a solid drawing for my artwork before beginning the painting process. I often do small color studies early on to establish the moon and make sure there is harmony within the image.

Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
I think the main ideas and overall feeling to much of my work is an attempt to imbue a very deliberate message, regardless of the category of the work. Though I am a lush for horror and melancholy, and tend towards those
themes often in personal works. I do try and take great care to weave a layered story into all of my works, professional and personal. Indeed, it is half the fun of creating art!

Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
The main color of my artworks are often earthy and dark. Recently I have been attempting to add a few more splashes of color into my creations and build a more comprehensive palette into my body of work.

Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
If there is anything I want to work on with my art, it is that I would like to become lighter in my personal criticism and more carefree in my process.

Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
I am currently working on writing and illustrating a short story. Some concept artwork for it has already been leaked onto my DeviantArt page and portfolio website ( www.ryanleeart.com ) , though I have yet to provide any public context for it.

Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of Ryan-Alexander-Lee.
3 Words off the top to describe Ryan Alexander Lee: Subtle, Researched, and Persistent.

Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
I’d say the first “Real” work of my professional career would be the “Until I Say” illustration (just the one in this article). It captures a lot of the personal struggle I was enduring at the time, both cerebral and socially. It also serves as a very important chapter in the short story I am writing.

Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
I think what has changed most for me and my artwork has been trying to accomplish more with less. I’ve been looking to many more “impressionistic” contemporaries to learn about better brush economy and to know when enough is enough. Too much detail can derail a painting.

Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
Art for me was about escaping from reality when I was younger. Now it has truly become the essence of life, and I suspect that will become even more true in the passage of time.
