Reality Comes

Q1: When did you start making art?
Hm, art, I don’t know, but since a longer time I paint, draw and write a bit, but till now only for me. Just a few years ago I discovered photography on my journey to find ways to express myself creatively, but I had it for some time in mind as an idea. As a child I photographed infrequently and learned a bit about it in school.

Q2: What does inspire you?
Shadows and light, life and death …

I’m mostly inspired by personal experiences, inner processes and disputes.
I also read a lot of books and poetry and I especially love the works of Hilde Domin and I feel a closeness to her words and feel touched by them.
Many things around me as nature, music, art … can be a source of inspiration as well – actually everything that personally moves me and triggers something inside of me.

Q3: What are your techniques?
I mostly use my DSLR Olympus E-5 and for my self portraits a remote release and a tripod.
For certain pictures, like landscapes or nature I occasionally take pictures with an analogue camera.
Often I use photoshop, sometimes more, sometimes less.
But I never follow a strict pattern when it comes to the emergence of an image.
I’m guided by my feelings, dreams and thoughts. From time to time they make me change only a few things, sometimes they make me carve out details for a longer time. Many of my pictures have their very own way of coming to existence.

Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
A focus of my photographic work is to tell my own little stories with self portraits.
All of them have a very personal meaning.
Often my pictures reflect various “darker” feelings for example sadness or fear.

Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
Not all, but many of my pictures are black and white.
Often a picture seems more effective for me when it’s in a very reduced form – even sparse in color.

Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
I myself still feel as a beginner or rather as a seeker in art and so I have a lot to learn, discover and improve in the future. So this is like in life: You never stop learning.

Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
It would be nice to have a bit more of time to still be able to implement my ideas into pictures.

Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of Philomena-Famulok.
dreaming – asking – seeking

Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
This HERE is not the oldest picture, but I think, the oldest one you can find online from me and in any case one of the very first. It’s a self portrait, a diptych, shot with my first DSLR and with natural light. I want to show a personal emotion and thought with it.
Maybe it’s not so important to know, what exactly I want to express with it – I think it’s nice when everyone can find something of their own in a picture.

Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
I’m not quite sure. I think maybe nothing has changed so much at all. But of course I have improved certain things and tried new stuff, other cameras, other techniques. But after all for me it is still only about finding an expression with my images.

Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
For me, art is not necessarily an escape from reality. Maybe in the case that I can sink throughout creative work totally into this process and there I can forget the outside. But mostly art for me is even more becoming aware of an inner or outer reality, a kind of reflection or confrontation with it.
In any case art and creative work is a constant part of my life, a passion and also a kind of an inner need for me. That’s why art is quite something of a Essence of life for me.
