Q1: When did you start making art?
While I’ve been making art since I was a child, I did go through a number of years when I was not involved in much art making due to various circumstances. I have taken it up again in recent years, and hope to continue to do so.

Q2: What does inspire you?
Many things inspire me, but for the most part I am inspired by different artists, music, films, books and travel.

Q3: What are your techniques?

I have dabbled in digital and mixed media, but find myself focusing on drawing and painting at present.

Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
Simply said, it is the mystery of life and death and the reason for our time here, and our time beyond here… the possible meaning of it all fascinates me.

Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
Gold. I’m inspired greatly by Gustav Klimt, who used a great deal of it in his work. I find the use of gold conveys an ethereal quality. It speaks of something otherworldly, an energy that resonates from another plane of reality that we may not see, but exists nonetheless.

Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
I wish to continue to improve my painting skills so that I feel I can confidently handle the medium.

Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
I will soon be working on the largest painting I have ever attempted. It will be a continuation of the themes I am currently interested in expressing. I wish to continue to pursue my painting and share it with people via different avenues, whether it’s online galleries/sites or live shows.

Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of Jill Koval.
Seeker. Peace. Mystery.

Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
This work HERE is from quite a few years back, early on in my attempts at painting. It is acrylic on canvas. Although in its infancy at that point, I believe it to be an early indication of the ideas and themes that I am tackling at present.

Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
I believe I am better adept at painting. I am more assured of what it is I am trying to convey, while being more able to let go and just let whatever needs to happen happen. I am open to the images that come to me, confident that the meaning will unravel itself as much as it needs to as I go along.

Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
Art for me is not necessarily an escape from reality, but is a way of visualizing a realm of reality that is the essence of life. It is a creating of and stepping into that reality. It is a way of enriching our lives and expanding on the idea of reality.
