Q1: When did you start making art?
Well I’ve been painting and creating ever since I can remember, but I think I’ve only started taking my art more seriously (haha, not that I’m ever really serious!) for about 3 years now.

Q2: What does inspire you?
Oooh anything macabre and surreal! I have an unhealthy obsession with all things albino, I just love that raw palette…but honestly, I can be inspired by pretty much anything… colours, nature, music, books, etc…I used to do a lot of paintings from dark fantasy books. Oh, and the human form, definitely! We are such sensual and interesting creatures after all.

Q3: What are your techniques?
Techniques? Errrmm… haha, well I’m more a kind of spontaneous artist so my technique will change from painting to painting and I’ll use pretty much whatever is on hand…brush, twig, lump of chocolate. But I would say I always work with a slightly dreamy texture in mind… I love to see tactile paintings with lots of subtle hues and brushstrokes, so I tend to do a lot of blending colours in my work… but always with lots of exposed, delicious marks!
I guess my painting process includes more of an ‘anti-technique’ as I’m a big fan of just going with intuition… less planning, more feeling and just responding to those feelings in whatever way feels right at the time. It’s a little scary sometimes not knowing what you’re going to end up with but the surprise is always an enjoyable factor too, and you end up with a piece of art which feels so much more alive and mysterious.

Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
I don’t always plan my works a a specific concept in mind, however, I would definitely consider myself an emotional painter…growing up I’ve always struggled with a skin condition and feeling anxious and self-conscious, so most of my paintings contain undertones of this… Currently I’m working through a loose concept I’ve named ‘PrettyUgly’, which is all about capturing the beauty within the dark or ‘ugly’ side of things…I don’t have much of an interest in perfection, I would much rather see your flaws…

Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
As mentioned previously, I am completely addicted to the albino palette! – pale, translucent flesh and raw pinks and reds. I also love to use a lot of blood tones and deep rich blacks, aubergines, etc…it’s all about that contrast between the delicate and the dark! I actually love using all colours and experimenting with different combinations, but if I’m working on something more personal, I always return to the albinoblood palette hehe…there’s just something so sensual about those colours to me.

Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
Haha, so much! I think as an artist you are always practising and learning things. For me it’s definitely anatomy..it can take several attempts for me to get it to a place where I am sort of content… or I just give up and say ‘that’ll do, well I can always disguise that abysmal thing with some patterns or something’… yeah, I fail so much sometimes.

Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
Hmmm, thinking forward, I’m probably going to carry on with my ‘PrettyUgly’ stuff until I get bored of it… and then we’ll see! I don’t have a plan as such, just whatever I feel like doing really… although I am working towards finding myself a little magical forest studio, in a cave, with a waterfall…and stuff πŸ˜›

Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of HesterTatnell.
Ahhh I’m really bad at this kind of thing! Okay, we’ll say… Shy, ridiculous…and a little twisted.

Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
Oh my gosh, well I have better drawings from that time but this HERE was the first image I ever posted online (I think!!)… haha I was like 14 or something, don’t judge πŸ˜›
…and hehe well I think I drew this after reading a particularly good series of fantasy books… I was so in love with one of the characters!!! …So this is just your typical teen girl venting some frustration because he wasn’t real… oh dear, ha!

Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
Oh dear, unfortunately not that much! Seems I still vent everything in my painting, I just have different things to vent about now haha. Although I would say I’m much better at painting people now… and mouths apparently! Why does he not have a mouth?

Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
Oooh, an escape from reality for sure!! It’s also a way for me to express myself without having to talk to anyone – I probably sound like a real mopey ball of self pity, but after channelling all the negativity into my art I’m actually a super smiley and positive person πŸ™‚ …I don’t know, it’s many things really. I do love creating little visions of dark fantasy… an alter ego, a sanctuary, a dream, a new muse πŸ™‚
I just love the fact that there are no rules with art … I can paint something from every part of my soul, other people can see it but only I will know what it truly means and the journey I took to get there hehe… little hidden secrets.
