Q1: When did you start making art?
I’ve always made art. Whether it was drawing toys I had as a kid, or drawing characters off shows or Pokemon cards, it has always been something I’ve done. But art as I do it now didn’t really start until the last few years when I got into digital painting.
Q2: What does inspire you?
Anything really, sometimes I watch a movie, show, video game, and it kicks something off where I have to make some kind of art related to it. Or it could be something simple as just looking at the way shadows hit a building and liking the general shape so I use that as a composition. Anything can hit that inspiration button.
Q3: What are your techniques?
It depends, sometimes I hand draw my sketches and then scan them into the computer to work on in photoshop, or sometimes I just start painting right into photoshop. But all pieces are finished in photoshop with my tablet.
Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
It depends on the piece I am working on. Some are meant to evoke wonder and nostalgia, and some should evoke fear and be unsettling, and sometimes you make those cute and cuddly ones. It all depends on the purpose of what I am working on.
Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
It all depends on the piece. But I like to vary my colors with each piece. I usually set a temperature that I feel goes with the piece and I work from there.
Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
There is always room for improvement, I definitely need more. But just doing art is improving, it’s constantly making you work and solve problems in your head. It’s all about drawing new things for the experience and learning from it.
Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
I’m working on a few things, I’ve been on a fan art binge lately, because I’m going to be selling at Animazement in May.
Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of ZachSmithson.
Need more words.
Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
This HERE was the first thing I ever did with digital painting.
Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
Everything. Photoshop is an endless program, there are so many tools to use and combinations of tools, mixed with user input, there is always something new to learn.
Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
I wouldn’t say escaping from reality as much as creating my own. I can make my own world within the piece that is entirely my own aesthetic for how I want it to look.
