year of birth: Lets just say early 70s.
Q1: When did you start making art?
I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember but went over to painting digitally about 15 years ago.
Q2: What does inspire you?
I’m inspired by a lot of things, but I’m very visually orientated so its primarily by things I see rather than hear- a lot of artists pull inspiration through music and listen to it while they work, but for me I find looking at the world around me or obviously now- through a screen, more inspiring.
Q3: What are your techniques?
I used to paint traditionally but now my tools are all digital, I use a WACOM Intuos3 tablet and Corel Painter, Photoshop and Artrage as my main tools.
Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
The vast majority of my work is centred around portraying feminine beauty, often through simple portraiture but I also do pieces that are more character driven with a specific narrative- often involving folklore.
Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
I dont think I’ve ever really thought about it, I just use the colours that are appropriate for the piece, there does seem to be quite a lot of black in my works over the years though!
Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
Ha- thats an easy one, everything.. I’m never happy with what I do, I think thats quite the same for a lot of artists, you can always learn more- improve your skills. There is no ‘this is as good as I will get’ moment.
Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
I’m currently trying to finish a project I started last year. It’s a portrait series using models who have kindly volunteered themselves on Instagram. I put out a call for possible models last year and got an overwhelming response, some 800+ people put themselves forward, it was hard work trying to chose just 15 or so models for the project! The completed works will be available to purchase later this year direct from my shop, it’s not something I’m putting through a gallery. There will also be a catalogue/book that will collect all of the works together.
Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of Tom Bagshaw.
3 words that describe my work would possibly be: Beauty, dark, ethereal?
Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
Lol my first ever work I did traditionally I cant even remember, I think it was a Peregrine Falcon or something when I was about 5? But I remember my first ever digital piece, it was actually a quick favour for my brother. I had got a second hand computer (it was some massive thing that probably had less power than some watches now- let alone mobile phones!) and was trying to teach myself Painter V5.5, I had a really crappy little tablet and when my brother asked my to do something for his bands album cover I thought it would be a good time to try out what I had learnt. Obviously it’s terrible and when I look back at it I still shudder, but surprisingly its still a favourite with a lot of people! Check it out here: HERE
Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
Time and experience changes everything.
Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
Certainly escaping reality!
