surname: De Spain
year of birth: 1984
Q1: When did you start making art?
I didnt draw a whole lot when I was young. I drew just as much as any average kid did. I guess I started actually making it a thing around age 22-23. Since then, I have been addicted to drawing and it has become a great focus in my life.
Q2: What inspires you?
Everything! Friends, artists, nature, movies, music, books and games. I try to pay attention to everything I can. Many great ideas can spawn from normal ordinary things.
Q3: What are your techniques?
I used to digitally paint 100%, but lately I have been focusing on more pencil work. I scan the image into photoshop and clean/paint on it.
Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
The feeling/Idea can vary depending on if its work for myself or for a studio. But overall the main thing in my head is, make it look cool and have fun doing it!
Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
My colors tend to jump around randomly. They do lean more on the saturated side. I guess I like bright colors.
Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
I can always improve my fundamentals. Values, Color, Line work, Figure drawing, etc. Those are things that an artist should always pay attention to and be diligent in improving on.
I also want to improve my storytelling. Be it illustrating or writing. I really enjoy creating worlds, and I want to improve on conveying those worlds in a way that will allow me to share it with people.
Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
I am part of a group of artists that are releasing an art book this month called Substrata. There is also a game I have been working on called Evolve that will come out in October of this year.
I also have a personal project I have been developing on the side. I will show parts of it some time in the near future.
Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of NickDeSpain.
I would say I am an ‘Art student forever.’ I will always learn and strive to improve. Even when Im 80 and working on Photoshop CS90, I will be looking up tutorials and studying daily!
Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
Unfortunantly I do not have a link to my early work. It is probably better for your eyes not to see it :). I rememeber it was a fan art of the Pyro from TF2. It was awful!
Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
Understanding anatomy, value, and color are the obvious changes I have seen in my work in comparison to my early work.
Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
Art is an extension of myself. It allows me to show the world what is in my head. I dont see it as an escape, but more of a welcome sign for others to peer into my mind.
