Q1: When did you start making art?
I started… a long time ago…. painting graffiti on the walls of my hood when I was 16 years ago. The reason I started to paint was graffiti. Coming home from school I always watched the pieces of Sendys, a local grafftiti artist, so when I had the chance, I started to copy his style.
It was horrible, but I found my way and I felt at home doing it.
Q2: What does inspire you?
What inspires me… From music to the Universe. Horror movies, the paranormal, religions, philosophy, ancient cultures, myths, urban legends, fear, spiritisim, the death…. and the list goes on. Maybe the most important imfluence is the unknow. We live with the fear of unknow since the man is man. Fear made us as we are, made sense to our existence. Fear of the unknow have a magnetic attraction to us. Evey single ancient culture have ghosts, vampires, devils, demonic possessions, a figure of evil, rituals…. and the fear of what happens after the death.
Death is also a part of our life. The afterlife makes our life have sense if you´re religious or not. There are so many concepts of heaven and hell, every period of our history have a dark side… so mix it all and you can imagine how many things can have an influence on me. Religious art, Delacroix, Caravaggio, El Greco….to many things.
And my music. Is cool to make music and paint the feelings. And paint and create the sound of the image.
Q3: What are your techniques?
I dont think I have a technique. I mean…. if I have a technique, is to create an image and after that, destroy it. I use aerosol spray, ashes of cigarettes, a kleenex as a brush… and for my ink work, sometimes I use cotton too… I always try to add some new things on my works. You know, I’m not the usual stencil artists, I dont want to call me stencil artists, even I dont like to call myself artist. I just try to do something different, to find my own style, and never stop to do it. So about technique… the technique maybe is an anti-technique.
Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
You know, I paint concepts more than images. I always put a text on my works, giving an extra information about it. And a song. Somebody told me I create a multimedia experience. I don’t know if I do it, but if I paint about something, I want to show why and where and who…. And let you think.
And destroy the pop images and ideas about things like zombies, satanism, and things like that. Or just give some info about our ancient culutures.
Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
Black an white, sometimes red. Why… easy. Light and darkness. Good and evil. And it fits so well with my images, specially because the 90% of my images are ghosts.
Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
Time. I´ve no patience and I’m always busy, making music, paintint commissions, making t-shirt designs… or just having fun. I really don’t spent a lot of time painting my stuff, maybe around a couple of hours, so I know if I´ll spent more time on it, the images will be better. But I really don’t care about it. I just care to create every day.
Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
I’m recording my first official album right now, writting a script for a short horror movie, making some songs for other people, mixing some stuff for a radio show, I’ve a t-shirt brand and I want to make new designs for the summer…. I never stop. There´s no future, the future is now, so lets rock!
Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of DeivCalviz.
Unexpected. Dark. Funny.
Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
You can find the beginning of my ” rotten” faces style on this HERE. The image is so plane, without volume, but I started to want to give texture, the ghostly backgrounds, one of my “singnatures”, started too with this one…. and the colors. I don’t want to show nothing in special, but when I finished it, I thought…. damn… I think I found my way. I used aerosol spay and a rotten brush.
Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
Mmmmm…. a lot of things. Now I try to give textures, volume, shadows…. the figures are alive… I know a lot of people who are scared of it, because they told me sometimes it seems they’re moving or looking at them. The technique is different, I know more tricks, I use a lot of different elements, like ashes of cigarettes…. And sometimes I make a special song for the work.
Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
My art is my life. Is my lifestyle, my way to live, to pay bills, to make me feel alive. Not a job, a hobbie, an escape… it’s just life. I wake up and paint or make music, if I’m not painting or making music, I’m reading or watching something, and it gives me ideas or inspiration… even when I cook I’m thinking on the next one…. That’s why I don’t call myself an artist. I live it. Fuck labels. Its my home. So welcome to my home, ladies and gentleman.
