year of birth: 1990
Q1: When did you start making art?
I started making art a couple of years ago.
Q2: What does inspire you?
I have got countless inspirations. Everything that I consider beautiful, such as paintings, movies, music, photography, can be a perfect source for me.
Q3: What are your techniques?
Behind my works there are several photos, which I usually overlap, reassemble and modify using photoshop.
Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
First of all, my instinct guides me. However, also the mood I have got in a determined moment highly affects me.
Recently I’m obsessed with portraits. I think that gazes and faces always hide something as mysterious as beautiful.
Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
I love working with cold colors or simply with black and white but in my works there are also warm shadings, in particular shades from red to yellow.
Anyway, there is not a particular reason for the choice of colors.
Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
I think that my way of making art is still unripe. At the moment I am trying to improve both the abstract and the conceptual parts of my works, pandering to my personal taste.
Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
I don’t like planning the future.
Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of Mathias Rat.
Observant, Reflective, determined.
Q9: Show us your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
This work HERE dates back to some years ago. The idea which hides behind it is the decadence of Beauty. I immediately considered it really beautiful: a pure and sensual body. It was the first experiment in which I used hybrid techniques generally called “mixed media” and “photomanipulation”.
Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
As you can see, my first works are really unripe and rough compared to my latest ones. In my opinion, the ripening process of an artist should be spontaneous. If so, the artist will reach a complete maturation.
Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
I believe that Art is not only the essence of Life, but also Beauty and Death. Making art means feeling alive.
