name: Mab Graves
year of birth: –
Q1: When did you start making art?
I have loved drawing from the moment I could grip a crayon as a baby. I think in one form or another art has always been a part of my life ^_^ I didn’t start painting till around 6 years ago though. It’s been a relatively new and fabulous discovery for me!
Q2: What does inspire you?
It depends on the day, the mood, the feeling. I am always being inspired by new things! I love old folklore and fairy tales. Also classic literature. Dreams, old cartoons and anime….the list is endless!
Q3: What are your techniques?
I’m a painter. I use mostly oils, but I also play with gouache, acrylic, watercolor, inks etc. I love any brush medium!
Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
That changes from piece to piece. I love tell stories in my paintings so central themes are always changing depending on what project I’m working on. Beautiful strangeness and innocence are always present in my pieces though.
Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
I don’t have a main color! Each piece is different and has different color needs depending on the story being told.
Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
I never set pressure or expectations on my work. It’s not fair to my pieces. I love them all blindly no matter what and never look at my work and say “That needs to be different.” They are perfect for just who they are.
That being said, I am always striving to grow. To get deeper and more detailed. I set new challenges for myself all the time!
Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
Oh yes! I paint about 12 hours a day. I always have a million projects in the works.
My next full series exhibit will be September 5th – it’s going to be Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass ^_^ I’m very excited for it.
Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of Mab Graves.
Stray Dreamchild Neverist
Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
I don’t have any online links to my beginning work. I only started putting work online a few years ago ^_^
Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
Art for me is a need, a passion, an addiction, an extension of religion…an obsession. It’s my driving force. I always say if you took the art of me I would be less than a shell – I would just be a whiff of smoke and then be gone.
