A Hero by JulijanaM

Q1: When did you start making art?
Like every child, I loved to paint and draw, and those interests never disappeared, but as I grew up, they got suppressed. But four years ago I started to have the need to create art: I got my first camera and my first tablet and started learning.

Q2: What does inspire you?
A lot of things. The main sources of my inspiration are my dreams and emotions, and, of course, amazing artists I follow 

Q3: What are your techniques?
At first I drew by hand and then scanned the drawing to later paint it in Photoshop, but since my scanner broke, Photoshop is my main painting tool, and I use Wacom Bamboo Pen tablet. As for the exact painting techniques, they are changing, even now since I’m still learning.
As for photography, I use Fujifilm HS30 and Nikon D5100 with a 50mm lens and use Photoshop as editing software.

Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
I like conveying emotions. Sometimes they are obvious, and sometimes more subtle and personal, but my paintings always have a certain sense of a hidden burden. I always have a main feeling(s) I want to transfer into my works, but the concept often changes from start to finish, although the essence and the idea stay the same.
In the photography part of my gallery there is a contrast between the photos that are more personal, and the ones that are not (usually nature shots).

Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
I don’t like using vivid colors in my paintings, so they are either monochrome, since I love painting in black and white, or have a very specific pallet.
The same goes for my photography- although the colors were very vivid when I first started taking photos, now the color palet is starting to change. I’m not sure where it’s going, but I can’t wait to find out 😀

Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
I always have things I have to work on, and the list would be just too long. For now, my main concerns are anatomy, background details and the speed- it takes too long for me to finish just one painting.

Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
Not really, but I plan to focus more on character design, but I hope my paintings and photography won’t become too neglected.

Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of JulijanaM.
Dreams, Surrealism, Emotions.

Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
This HERE is one of my first digital works. I was 6 or 7 and my aunt just got a computer, so I enjoyed painting and typing stuff.
Well.. Technique.. I used basic auto shapes and colors. I guess I just wanted to draw a happy mouse which, for some reason, I find a little creepy now.
In 2008. I did my first drawing in Photoshop HERE, not even with a mouse, but with a laptop touchpad. It’s kind of anime-ish, I was using Photoshop tools for the first time, so there is was a lot of dodge and burn involved.

Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
A lot, I guess. That was my only anime digital work, I started using more defined color palette, got rid of the line art and my progress started to show when I got my tablet. I’m still learning a lot with every painting I make so my work is still going through a lot of changes.

Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
Both. It’s the essence of my life because I have the inexplicable need to create things and convey my emotions visually. But it’s also an escape from reality which is, for me, sometimes just too plain and uninteresting.
