name: J. R.
year of birth: 1980
Q1: When did you start making art?
I have been drawing since I was four I believe.
Q2: What does inspire you?
Everything really. I could hear a phrase, some music, or a sound. I may dream about something and want to further polish the idea. Often ideas will just pop into my head unwarranted.
Q3: What are your techniques?
Most of my works are digital, painted in Photoshop. I typically start with a black and white sketch to attain my values and block in shapes, then move to a color layer to slowly start adding in color (via soft light, overlay, and color layers), then I move onto painting and adding the finer details.
Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
Most of my works are on the creepier side. I try to create things that will inspire a shiver, or perhaps make the viewer imagine the creature crawling, twitching, or breathing. I also try to push atmosphere, attitude, and mood in my pieces.
Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
I try not to stick to any color, but I seem to be drawn to blues, purples, and browns.
Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
Everything! Even works that I finish that I am proud of I end up hating about a week later. I will see many flaws in the piece after letting it simmer for a week (color choice, composition, painting techniques, and texture). It may not be the most healthiest frame of mind, but it is the vicious cycle I go through.
Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
Yes I do actually! I am currently working on a dark fantasy/sci-fi world that I would like to turn into a heavily illustrated novel. That may change paths though as I haven’t found a writer yet. The world will breach in some form eventually if I end up doing it solo via RPG, board game, card game, or an art book explaining the different facets of the world. Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of JRCoffronIII.
Driven, Perfectionist, Ambitious.
Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
It isn’t my first work, but these are some of my works just before taking a 10 year break from drawing. HERE
Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
Well for one, I primarily am a digital painter now. Aside from that, I have focused more on the creepier stuff than just straight fantasy.
Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
Art is the essence of life. Without having some kind of art in our lives I imagine we would all get withdrawn and depressed. Art is in most everything that makes us happy (Music, movies, plays, paintings, cooking, fashion, photography, books, haha just about everything really!)
