year of birth: 1979
Q1: When did you start making art?
I’ve been drawing since I was a child, but I was a teenager when I realised that that there were some ways to capitalize and get benefits through my skills/talents. It was much later, around 2008 that I decided to get really serious about it and apply for artschools and to produce on a regular basis.
Q2: What does inspire you?
Everything and anything. A good artist finds a way to make anything interesting, but if I had to be specific I’d say that music, movies and other artists are the most motivational inspirations.
Q3: What are your techniques?
I tend to go back and forth between the digital medium and the traditional with oils/acrylics on canvas.
Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
Most of the time I try to make something slightly ironic, yet emotional with a twist of weird. I like to have contradicting emotional values in a piece, like a disgusting monster that performs an undeniably cute act or the seemingly innocent small child that is torturing a defenseless animal. That way I can make the viewer question what horror/beauty really looks like and what it means.
Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
Oh, I’ll use any color. Don’t have a preference. I do tend to use payne’s grey when doing underpaintings for acrylic/oil-paintings.
Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
I’d love to feel more comfortable with painting enviroments and spaces. I tend to go with just characters surrounded by a void. I feel like they deserve more, but I’m quite lazy sometimes.
Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
No, nothing big. I get some commissions every now and then, and in between I paint for my own pleasure and expression.
Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of DanielKarlsson.
Insecure, calm, philosopher
Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
My first work? From how long ago do you mean?
Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
Can’t really answer this question either since I’m not sure what you mean with first work.
Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
Art is a combination of both, I guess. You sort of escape to a place within yourself, where you can deal with thoughts, emotions and life from a different perspective. Then you channel all that through the expression of your painting, externalising and giving life to those thoughts and emotions.
