collien
name: Anna
surname: Hoffmann
year of birth: 1990
country: Poland
Q1: When did you start making art?
That’s a tricky question!
I started taking photos when I was 14. With a casual digital compact, nothing special.
But when I turned 15, I decided to capture people on my photographs and then I started to learn, I wanted to create something specific, something mine, with soul. But when all this turned in to art? I think when I was late 16.
Q2: What does inspire you?
Reality. Everything that I see everyday. People, their bodies. Nature, feelings and everything which was made by a human. Movies, music, my own problems and joys.
Q3: What are your techniques?
I don’t really have any technique. I just hold a camera in my hands and use one finger to shot. In post-production I’m focused on shadows, deph of field. Usually I manually add something which is missing in the oryginal photo by a very simple edition in PhotoShop.
Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
Reality again. I want to show only what is real. Emotions or passion. Sadness or hope.
Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
Black. It’s all about black. Saturation, contrast. The balance between highlights and shadows.
Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
I have a problem with the technical side. Sharpness most often, high ISO. I’m forgetful, sometimes too much in a hurry.
Many things are limited – for example, abilities og the models or the lack of props. I would like to go further, create something fabulous but I do not have the appropriate items.
Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
Yes. I need to repeat 3 sessions, which I needed to delete couse of the models will. So I want to do the same subjects again, with someone else.
And I got few ideas which can’t be made now couse of the current season.
Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of collien.
Messy, fierce, worried.
Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
It was hard to me to decide, which one I should pick.
I remember many old photos but they are gone forever with my broken, old computer.
February 5, 2006. First photo from DeviantART with a person on it.
HERE I was just chatting with my neighbor. I was doing some photos for fun. Trying to get some nice frame. Not so obvious, so her face is not shown at the photo. I really don’t remember much. No technique, no thoughts. Just a simple picture.
Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
Now I think about every shadow, angle or object around. I think it’s the only difference. Few years ago I was just clicking, now I arrange everything, every detail. It’s just less accidental.
Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
Escaping from reality. I mentioned that I like and I show only real things. But when I’m on photo session or just simply walk the streets I feel free. I’m focused at only one thing. I have in mind only one thing. I have no personal emotions, I don’t bother myself about my home or my boyfriend. I am making something. Now, in this moment. Nothing else matters. Even when I use PhotoShop, sitting in my room – I prefer not to talk to anyone. All I need is to grab some smokes and coffee.
