Q1: When did you start making art?
I’ve been making art forever. I remember drawing in Kindergarten. I didn’t start getting consistent work until I was nearly 28, though, when I started doing portraits and caricatures at a tourist trap in New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina washed me out , I decide to put together a concept art portfolio. After some trying, I managed to break into concept art for video games, where I’ve been ever since.

Q2: What does inspire you?
Tons of movies, comics, music. I get ideas from everywhere. Lately my influences have been somewhat obscure 80s fantasy stuff, like The Dark Crystal, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and more. That and Stoner Rock.

Q3: What are your techniques?
Mostly all digital using a Cintiq. Sometimes I draw on paper and scan it in. I rarely paint anymore, but I would like to get back into it if I have time.

Q4: What is the main idea or feeling behind your works?
I try to inject personality and the capacity for a full range of emotion in my character concepts. Something more than just generic angry monsters. I’m also concerned with getting the tone and atmosphere right. I’m not too worried about details.

Q5: What is the main color of your art and why?
I dunno. I use whatever is appropriate. Lately my colors have been pretty desaturated, though.

Q6: What would you improve about your work and why?
Being more expressive and less labored. Its tricky.

Q7: Do you have any project for the future?
In addition to my work at Obsidian and my freelance work, I’m working on my own fantasy project called Infinitum. Its still in the early phase, but I should be releasing some concrete info on it soon.

Q8: Describe yourself with 3 words capturing the essence of Mac Smith.
weird, out-of-date, and stubborn :)

Q9: Show us (link) your very first work. Describe it from techniques till feelings.
Heh, I think most of it has been deleted by now (thank god! It was pretty bad!). HERE
is some old stuff back when I was into vector art (2003).

Q10: What did change from your first work till now?
Heh everything. Hopefully it will continue changing.

Q11: What is art for you? Escaping from reality or the essence of life?
For me its about telling stories. I’m not sure if I’m a pure artist to be honest. I just want to tell stories, and visual art helps me do that. I’m not really interested in doing art for art’s sake (though I like a lot of that).

  Love this art!
